Bought it haha. Man I'm so kind to you guys xD :

Papa Roach front man Jacoby Shaddix can still vividly recall his first encounter with alcohol. It was the day before his friends birthday and the two young teens had spent the day shovelling rocks. The work ethic had been drilled into them both and Shaddix would routinely mow lawns or wash cars in order to fund his burgeoning obsession with music. This time however, the $30 or so they’d earned would be converted into Vodka and the pair would polish off an entire bottle between them. They ended up wandering the streets until they were picked up by the cops and deposited back home, in a semi-conscious state, to await both the first hangovers of their lives and a parental carpeting.
For Shaddix it was the start of a love/hate relationship with booze and drugs that, today, still plays a massive part in his life. And it is perhaps telling that the first time he drank, he drank to excess: one drink's too many and a hundred’s not enough, as the alcoholics mantra has it.
The young Shaddix continued to drink, earning the nickname Johnny Vodka in the process, before moving onto pills and selling shrugs to make a little money on the side.
“It was mostly fun,” he says of his early experiences. “When my band started to move, the partying was all part of the lifestyle. I was having a good time and I didn’t hate myself but then, when we went and toured on Infest, it spiralled out of control. Hookers and blow and anything goes. Every night it was woman, alcohol, drugs – anything I could get in me. And I repeated that cycle for about four years”.
It was however a cycle that really didn’t agree with the singer. “Wallow in my pain| I swallow as I pretend|to act like I’m happy| When I drink” he’d already sung on Binge, from the breakthrough album. But it was more than just a lyric.
“I'm really good at faking like things are all good. A lot of people around me thought I was fine and inside I wanted to fucking die,” said a lean and healthy looking Shaddix today. “I was a cutter, I was suicidal- there were countless calls to my wife saying I was gonna jump out the fucking hotel window. I came home one night in a blackout state and spilled the beans to my wife about everything I'd done. I went insane and tried to burn the house down and when I woke up the next morning I just said ‘I can ‘t do this anymore. I’m going to fucking die if I do’”.
That breaking point came in 2004. That year, Getting Away With Murder was the first album that Shaddix made while sober. It was he says a liberating experience, but the sobriety wouldn't last.
“I’d put 10 months together and then fall off the wagon. Then I’d pout two weeks together, then a fucking year, and then I’d fall off again. It’s something that’s really hard for me but I’m not a good person when I drink.”
Ask how long he’s been sober this time and he’ll tell you, without hesitation, 70 days. This is clearly a man who keeps count and crucially, a man who keeps trying even when he fails.
“When I was growing up I always said I’d never be like my father and then I looked at myself and I was just like him,” he sighs. “I love my kids to bits and I guess that’s what motivates me. I want to be there for my children.”
