Kerrang! Concert Review!

Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 10:35 AM by Sammy!

So I was GOING to post this in the show review section, but I guess that's kinda more for OUR reviews, and this is kinda more "official"? Anyway, here's what they had to say:

Papa Roach
Plus: Madina Lake, Heaven's Basement
Rock City, Nottingham
07.10.09
KKK/ KKKKK

Had you bought Papa Roach's breakthrough album Infest, in 2000, and then taken up residence under a rock for the rest of the decade, it's doubtful you'd even recognise the band playing tonight. This Papa Roach, all black garb, shock hair and tattoos, are closer to Motley Crue than anything you'd associate with their nu metal roots. It means one of two things: that Papa Roach have rediscovered the music they loved as kids, or that they're doing whatever it takes to avoid the fate of Alien Ant Farm.

Opener's Heaven Basement, who attack with their usual abandon, lips curled and guitars set to kill, are excellent. Madina Lake, meanwhile could virtually have co-headlined. Their set is accompanied by near constant screams ad the understandably gleeful looking pop-rockers tear into Never Take Us Alive, a song florid with melody that wastes no time in making its point. The only downside to Madina Lake’s performance is a somewhat muddy sound.

The Opener's Heaven Basement, who attack with their usual abandon, lips curled of 2009 is a lean, effective rock band led by an interestingly demented looking Jacoby Shaddix, whose redline energy and bug-eyed exuberance make him an entertaining frontman. Wherever you are in the venue, Jacoby makes you feel like he’s watching you, that you’re part of this whether you like it or not. But in a weird Invasion Of The Body Snatchers-type process, however, the frontman appears to be gradually morphing into Nikki Sixx. Bouncing from old school rap-metal Dead Cell to Nickelback-ish radio fodder Had Enough, there is something about their wild evolution that just doesn’t sit right. When it comes to the crunch, they can deliver as well as most headliners. But how much of it do they generally mean?

Opinions?

I think the remarks made about them possibly not having any meaning in their performances is total bullshit! And cimparing them to Nickelback?..I like the ML review though haha. I do think a three K review is DEFINITELY not enough. The gig was amazing!

yea the article is BS. why in the hell are they comparing papa roach's music to motley crue and nickelback??? haha they think had enough is nickelback-ish...Had Enough is an amazing deep meaningful song.....and nickelback could never touch on that. and they honestly think that jacoby is morphing into nikki sixx lmao....why is that because they both have black hair and have tattoos....i know alot of other rockstars that have black hair and tatt's i guess they're morphing into sixx too....geez!

papa roach is one of the most amazing bands i have seen live and it's because of their wild energy! and yes jacoby does a fucking awesome job at getting the WHOLE crowd involved with their performance..... and damn right PR does deliver as fucking headliners!

    X.

I can't stand Kerrang, It's only good for Pictures.
If a band can sell out a whole tour everytime they come to the UK, that must at least say there are fucking awesome right?

Kerrang is bullshit when it comes to reviewing PR. it's only because they only review stupid bands and don't recognise those that are actually GREAT.

But i shan't go into my reasons for hating kerrang lol

Kerrang is one shite magazine. It's made for 12 year old fan girls. It's a joke. I couldn't care less what Kerrang says. All that matters is that us lot enjoy Papa Roach live shows. They slated a Disturbed gig I was at a few years ago when it was amazing.

Kerrang also have very short memories. In April they got 4 K's and they were praising them for growing into a very solid band with an entertaining show and saying how Coby had grown into his front man role, and how they had a solid set of songs.

Something tells me that 6 months doesn't change that.

not to mention kerrang suck on the preverbial cock of popularity the fact that they change there opinions of gigs every few weeks is a sign that kerrang goes with whatever is popular and never actually give praise where its due and agree with bri there about them reviewing the gigs off beginning of year then suddenly changing review from the past weeks gigs. kerrang sold out along time ago

Totally agree the review was rubbish have to wonder if they actually attended the gig?? Plus after the April review (and I would say Papa Roach were even better this time if thats possible) it does make Kerrang look like dickheads!

Jacoby is a fab front man I love the fact that he can sing as well as scream! I was at the Brixton show and I don't think anyone can say they did not have a great time.
