Read any good books lately??

Wed, Dec 30, 2009 at 3:22 PM by joeythemetalhead

Hey all, I'm in the middle of reading a book called "Malus Darkblade" by a guy called Dan Abnett. Bloody brilliant book!!
Anyhoo, it got me wondering, do people still read books as much as they used to or have computer games completely taken over? Hey don't get me wrong, I love my computer games but I love reading just as much!
So if you like to read and a have a favourite author or two why not share and maybe suggest a good book or two to people. Personaly I think we could all do with a good read now and again, be it fantasy, fiction, romance or a thriller or even a graphic novel!

So ill suggest a good writer: David Gemmell. That guy can right fiction/fantasy like there's no tomorrow!

i'm amazed. not many people i know like that book. or maybe it's because german students have to read it in school.
for me it was a pain in the ass to read the first part of it. good old school days *sighs*

one of my favourite writers are kathy reichs and tess gerritsen. "the surgeon" is a kick ass book by gerritsen.
and i have to admit that i love "pride and prejudice" by jane austen. xD

i am currently reading "A long way down" by Nick Hornby its really good so far... some of his books have been made into movies and i read somewhere that Johnny Depp bought the rights to this book i have mixed feelings bout this.... books i like turned into movies dont ususaly work out

    .....
I thought 'Slam' was pretty cool

A long way down was an amazing book. Imdb says its "in development" so its got a few years lol. I dont think Depp with ruin it, but then again, it may just not be meant for the transition from book to film.....Im curious to know if he is directing or acting or producing or what..the rights were purchased by infinitum nihil which is his production company i think....but thats the reason i read the book.
I never managed to finish slam...i liked it but never was able to finish it haha.

I got into the harry potter series this summer. AMAZING. I attempted to read the entire thing in 4 days, and was aiming for 7 but school started so it took about 2 weeks =_= SOO much better than the movies.
Im currently reading "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. Its a post apocalyptic tale. Was made into a movie recently with VIggo Mortensen. I've yet to see the movie since it wasn't playing in too many theaters. But the book is very interesting and written in a simplistic way...adds to the tone....or something lol.
Dan Brown and the DaVinci Code Series are spectacular. The movies are shit (in my opinion) but the books are great. The most recent one "The Lost Symbol" felt like it was kinda along the lines of National Treasure lol. I'm a sucker for historically linked novels like that.
I have yet to finish the history of the conquest of peru =_= yeah, 300 pages tiny print...very interesting....just tedious haha.
Chuck Palahniuk's books are great too. I've read most of them. "Invisible Monsters" is very interesting, as is "Haunted", which was probably my favorite with all of the little stories that are thrown in to the one big story....Its being made into a movie in the near future if i remember correctly. its got some sick shit in it though....stuff that does not leave your brain. ever. x_X

OH, and I read this book called "The Twelve" by..some scientologist...lol. Its got to do with 2012 but not in the sense that the world is ending, but in the sense that the world will be "reborn" or some shit...very interesting...

Ah, then there is Marley and Me...i just read it recently. I think i cried the last like, 4 chapters haha. Its very funny...different than the movie for sure. Very good though.

And i read Beautiful Boy by David Scheff (i think). Its about his son who was a meth addict and all the shit he/they went through..Very good book...though i wasnt too fond of his sons writing style when i picked up his book.

    /nerd. :D

*gag* the movie sucked. busta, im sure remembers my reaction...less than 5 minutes in "THATS NOT HOW IT WAS IN THE BOOK!". I was disappointed, to say the least lol. I never managed to sit through all of the DaVinci Code. Computer died 20 minutes in and I was about to give up on it anyways. haha. I hope they at least do The Lost Symbol justice, cuz no doubt, theyll be milking the series one last time for a bit more cash. They eliminated a few key points in the plot or changed something important with angels and demons though.

I only didnt like it cuz of how they deviated from the books story...i like it when movies are spot on...which is a little hard to ask for in some cases...its not like it was shit cuz there was a lack of development or no suspense....id say watch it online. i had high hopes and was just let down though.

Last book I remember reading was House of Thunder by Dean Koontz...though I remember now the last book I read was Harry Potter 7...but I'd read that already...I started Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury, but I lost it:(

Wait, I just remembered, it was The Regulators by Stephen King (says RIchard Backmen)..very good book:) and kind of distrubing...haha but Stephen King is. I got really into it fast and read it in like 3 days, normally Stephen King is hard for me to read, his books are slowish...I started The Stand and got bored, plus my brother told me everything that happens, kind of ruined it for me....so he gave me The Regulators:)
(oh and The Stand is currently missing, this is my moms fault, not mine, I gave it to her to read instead!)..

I need to finish a Dean Koontz book I started, forgot the name, but it is colorful and makes me dizzy..thanks for making me remember, starter of this thread!!!!!!!!!!!

I just finished The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. It was a really great read. It reminded me of Angels and Demons more than the Da Vinci Code (in fact I'm re-reading Angels and Demons lol)...

I also like the Stephanie Plum series from Janet Evanovich. These books have a little bit of action, a little bit of mystery, a little bit of comedy and a bit of romance.

I'm really glad this is a thread, I've been craving some new books lately and there are some great suggestions! :)

Im about 60 pages away from finishing Diary by Chuck Palahniuk.
Its.....interesting. I cant decide if i like how its written or not..the story is of course just as twisted as any other book by him. Gotta love it though.

Im also reading Paradise Lost in school. fuck, i HATE poetry. its blank verse too....so basically, its a regular read with weird word choice and order to fit the meter. i dont get it. lol.

I think im going to try to find where my copy of Survivor by Palahniuk went tonight, then embark on lord of the rings.

I just finished reading The Fellowship of the Ring last night. Tolkien is brilliant. I'm now on a severe LOTR kick. It's frightening XD
The movies have always been some of my favorites, but I couldn't make it though the books when I first tried to read them. Brilliant. Absolutely magnificent. Started on The Two Towers last night..about to go read some more :D

Prior to that, I read Diary and Survivor by Chuck P. Both your standard twisted Palahniuk books. Survivor was really interesting, but it had a very open ending, that left you to decide what actually happened to the guy.

We're reading Alice in Wonderland in school currently, and are going to go see it in IMAX when it comes out in March for a field trip. *score!* It's funny, cuz technically, it's a childrens story and we are an AP class. I've only read the first chapter so far, and it's a really easy read. There is no laboring through it.
